New Delhi. On 20th May 2026, chemists and druggists across the country successfully observed a nationwide one-day token strike called by the All India Organisation of Chemists & Druggists (AIOCD). The strike was organized in protest against the illegal and uncontrolled online sale of medicines, sale of medicines without valid prescriptions, and predatory deep discounting practices adopted by online medicine platforms.
Unanimous Support from Chemists and Druggists
Responding to the call given by AIOCD and various State Chemists & Druggists Associations, chemists and druggists across all districts kept their establishments closed and extended unanimous support to the movement, reflecting strong unity within the pharmaceutical trade community.
Memorandum Submitted to Prime Minister
AIOCD President J S Shinde and General Secretary Rajiv Singhal informed that a memorandum addressed to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi was submitted through Divisional Commissioners, District Collectors, SDMs, and Tehsildars across the country during the strike.
Key Issues Highlighted in Memorandum
The memorandum raised serious concerns regarding illegal and unregulated online sale of medicines, sale and home delivery of medicines without valid and verified prescriptions, and deep discounting practices by online platforms that are adversely affecting lakhs of small and licensed chemists.
Demand for Withdrawal of GSR Notifications
The Association demanded the immediate withdrawal of GSR 817(E) and GSR 220(E), alleging that these provisions are being misused by online platforms and quick commerce operators for uncontrolled sale of medicines.
Concerns Over Public Health and Safety
The chemist fraternity emphasized that medicines are not ordinary commodities and that online sale without proper verification poses a serious threat to public health, patient safety, and the regulatory framework established under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act.
Reminder of Covid-Era Contributions
The pharmaceutical trade highlighted that during the Covid pandemic, chemists served as frontline healthcare support providers and ensured uninterrupted supply of medicines across the nation. Despite repeated representations regarding illegal online operations, no effective action has been taken so far.
Appeal to Central Government
The Association urged the Central Government to take immediate corrective measures in the larger interest of patient safety, public health, and the protection of lakhs of small licensed chemists and their employees.
Peaceful Strike with Essential Services Maintained
The nationwide strike remained completely peaceful and received overwhelming support. Essential and emergency medicines were made available to needy patients, reflecting the humanitarian responsibility upheld by the chemist community.
