AI-Generated Fake Prescriptions Pose Serious Public Health Threat

New Delhi: :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} (AIOCD) has raised serious concerns over the growing misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate fake medical prescriptions. According to the organization, this emerging threat is enabling the illegal online sale of antibiotics, psychotropic drugs, opioids, and Schedule H & X medicines, posing a significant risk to public health across the country.

Media Investigations Reveal Alarming Trend

AIOCD President J S Shinde and General Secretary Rajiv Singhal informed that recent media investigations, including reports published in a reputed national newspaper, have exposed how AI-generated prescriptions with fabricated hospital names, registration numbers, and doctor details are being accepted by certain online platforms. The organization described the situation as deeply concerning and potentially dangerous.

Misuse of Government Notifications Alleged

The association further alleged that some illegal e-pharmacies are misusing Government Notifications GSR 817(E) and GSR 220(E) to bypass regulatory safeguards under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. According to AIOCD, these loopholes are being exploited to facilitate the sale of restricted medicines without proper prescription verification.

Online Platforms Lack Effective Verification

Unlike offline chemists, who physically verify prescriptions and maintain strict compliance with regulatory norms, many online platforms lack robust human verification mechanisms. This makes it extremely difficult to detect AI-generated fake prescriptions, increasing the risk of drug abuse, antibiotic resistance, addiction, and other serious health complications.

Demand for Immediate Government Action

AIOCD has urged the Government to immediately withdraw GSR 817(E) and GSR 220(E), shut down illegal e-pharmacies operating in violation of drug laws, and declare AI-generated prescriptions invalid nationwide. The organization emphasized that urgent regulatory intervention is essential to protect public health and prevent misuse of sensitive medications.
