New Delhi: The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has welcomed the notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (G.S.R. 477(E) dated June 9, 2026), which omits the word “Syrups” for cough from Item (7) under Serial No. 13 of Schedule K of the Drugs Rules, 1945.
AIOCD has consistently raised concerns regarding the misuse of Schedule K provisions by certain entities, including online pharmacies, for selling medicines without adhering to the safeguards under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules. The organisation has repeatedly called for a comprehensive review to prevent such misuse and ensure patient safety.
Concerns Over Misuse and Patient Safety
With the rapid growth of the pharmaceutical retail sector and the increasing number of licensed chemist shops across India, AIOCD emphasized the need to rationalize and restrict the stocking and dispensing of medicines under Schedule K by doctors and clinics.
The organisation stated that immediate amendments and a thorough review are necessary to prevent misuse, maintain a level playing field, and safeguard public health.
Leadership Calls It a Positive Step
AIOCD President J. S. Shinde and General Secretary Rajiv Singhal termed the amendment a significant and positive step towards ensuring responsible medicine distribution and closing regulatory loopholes.
However, they stressed that this is only the beginning and urged the Ministry to conduct a detailed review of Schedule K in consultation with stakeholders including regulators, healthcare professionals, pharmacists, chemists, patient groups, and industry representatives.
Advisory Issued to Members
Following the amendment, AIOCD has issued an advisory to all its member associations across the country to strictly comply with statutory provisions governing the sale of medicines and to exercise caution while dispensing cough syrups and other prescription drugs.
The organisation reiterated that patient safety and public health must remain the top priority, and medicines should be dispensed strictly in accordance with applicable laws.
